Ed Hooks in Hyderabad exclusively for DQE
Ed Hooks, a theatre professional who has designed and pioneered acting training specifically for animators was in Hyderabad to conduct an “Acting for Animators” workshop at DQ Entertainment.
It indeed was a privilege for DQEites who attended the workshop. He gave them an exclusive glimpse into acting in the animation world.
According to Ed, though animators and stage actors use the same acting theory the difference lies in the perception and application.
He is of the opinion that animators need to establish the relationship between thinking and emotion in order to grasp the concept.
He says that just by making a character look sad or happy does not amount to good acting; it is better described as an illustration of an emotion and illustration can never be equated with action! He argues that acting has almost nothing to do with words… it is all about intention, emotion and action.
Ed uses, in his workshops, numerous clips from animated and live action movies to illustrate acting principles. He explains how easy it is to animate the character that is talking compared to the one that is listening!
Ed Hooks has thirty years of invaluable experience as a theatre professional and has studied at the American University, Washington, D.C; University of Maryland and at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (1970).
His books, “Acting for Animators” and “Acting in Animation: A Look at 12 Films” are standard texts at animation schools all over the world, and he is in high demand for his guest lectures. He also has various published articles and writings to his credit.
In the words of our DQEites: “There aren't many like Ed Hooks, who conducts classes of acting particularly designed for animators! His lecture was lucid, thought-provoking and highly inspiring. He gives plenty of examples to support his logic! He covered quite a few important acting instructions in a very short period (a day in our case). He insisted on our inputs too. He is highly interactive and it added a new depth to our understanding of the acting in animation. Be it a classic like Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" or a modern one like "Lord of the Rings" he brought out the ‘acting’ in ‘animation’ alive! He no doubt is a genius and a treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom!”
